Diffraction of Waves

Is the spreading out of waves when they go through a gap.
OR
Is the apparent bending of waves around small obstacles.
ÞThe bending/spreading extent depends on the width of the gap in comparison to the wavelength of the waves.
Þ If the gap is bigger/wider, the less diffraction occurs, since ²the wider/bigger the width the less the diffraction².
Note:-
The amount of diffraction is greatest when the width of the gap/slit is the same as the wavelength of the waves.

APPLICATIONS OF DIFFRACTION
i)        It is used in determining the crystal structure of materials.

ii)       Is used in measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion, crystalline size and thickness of the thin Films.
