MEASUREMENT
1.
A student wants to
determine the density of a cuboid of material. He takes these measurements
·
Mass of the cuboid = 173.8
g
·
Length = 10.1 cm; Width = 4.8
cm; Height = 1.3 cm
Calculate the density of the material
in Kg/m3
2.
A geologist needs to
determine the density of the rock. First she weighs the rock and calculates
that its mass is 90 g. Next she measures the volume of the rock by immersing it
in water.
a) i) Use the information in figure above to determine the volume
of the rock.
ii) Express this volume in m3
[ 1ml = 1 cm3 = 10-6 m3]
b) Calculate the density of the rock in Kg/m3
3.
A skydiver jumps from a
plane. The skydiver is shown in the diagram
through the air. Force Y is the
weight of the skydiver.
(a)
Mass of the skydiver is 70
Kg. calculate the weight of the skydiver.
(b)
What causes force X?
4.
In
an experiment to determine the density of liquid, a student obtained the
following; Mass of beaker is 56 g, Mass of beaker and liquid is 72 g and Volume of
liquid is 20 cm3. Find
a)
The
density of liquid
b)
The
relative density of liquid
5.
A solid cube of steel has
each side 10 cm long.
i)
Find its mass if the
density of steel is 6.5 g/cm3.
ii) What volume of steel has a mass of 130 g?
6.
A rectangular metal block
measuring 8 cm x 5 cm x 2 cm has a mass of 880 g. What will be the mass of a block
of the same metal measuring 6 cm x 4 cm x 1 cm?
7.
A box has a 6 cm2
square base and contains water to a height of 7 cm.
i)
When a stone is lowered
into the water so that it is completely immersed, the water rises to height of
9 cm. What is the volume of the stone?
ii) What is the density of the stone given that given that its mass
is 200 g?
8.
A stone has a mass of
112.5 g. When the stone totally immersed in water contained in measuring
cylinder displaced water from 50 cm3 to 95 cm3. Find the
density of water.
9.
An empty 60 litres petrol
tank has a mass of 10 Kg. what will be its mass when full of fuel of relative
density 0.72?
10.
The mass of a density
bottle is 18.00 g when empty, 44.00 g when full of water, and 39.84 g when full
of a second liquid. Calculate the density of the liquid.
11.
A certain piece of metal
has a mass of 282.5 g, if when the block was totally immersed in overflow can
displace water in a beaker of mass 20 g. If the mass of water and the beaker was
45 g, find the relative density of the metal.
12.
A box of cough drops has a mass of 1.0 gram, and its
dimensions are 1.0 by 5.0 by 8.5 centimeters cubed. It contains 30 cough drops,
each of which has a mass of 2.2 grams. What is the density of the box when it
is full of cough drops?
