MOTION IN A STRAIGHT LINE
1.
A car of mass 1000 kg
travelling at 30 m/s has its speed reduced to 10 m/s by a constant breaking force
over a distance of 75 m. Find
i)
The cars
initial kinetic energy
ii) The final kinetic energy
iii) The breaking force
2.
A car is driven from town A
to town B, which is 60 Km due north of A, in 45 minutes. Determine;
i)
The average speed of the
car in Km/h
ii) The average velocity of the car.
3.
A body moving with a
velocity of 30 m/s is accelerated uniformly to a velocity of 50 m/s in 5
seconds. Calculate;
i)
The acceleration of the
body
ii) The distance traveled by the body
4.
A body released from rest
at a certain height above the ground. If the body strikes the ground with a
velocity of 60 m/s, calculate
i)
The height from which the
body was released
ii) The time taken by the body to strike the ground.
5.
A car accelerates from a
speed of 80 m/s to a speed of 120 m/s in 1 minute. It then moves with this
speed for 20 seconds and finally decelerates uniformly to a stop after another
2 minutes. Draw the velocity-time graph to represent the motion of the car,
hence calculate;
i)
The deceleration of the
car.
ii) The total distance traveled by the car.
6.
If a stone falls off from
the top of tall building;
i)
What is the velocity of the
stone after 3 seconds?
ii) How far will the stone have moved from the top of the building
in the 3 seconds?
7.
A car starts to move from
rest and accelerates uniformly at the rate of 2 m/s2 for 6 s. It
then maintains a constant speed for half a minute. After the brakes are
applied, it retards uniformly to rest in 5 s. Calculate;
i)
The total distance covered
in metres.
ii) The maximum speed reached.
8.
A stone is thrown
vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 29.4 m/s from the top of a tower
high. Find;
i)
The time taken to reach the
maximum height.
ii) The total time that elapses before it reaches the ground.
9.
An object is thrown
straight up with an initial velocity of 50 m/s.
i)
How long will it take to
reach its maximum height?
ii) To what height will it rise?
iii) What will be its velocity when it returns to its starting point?
iv) How long will it be in the air?
10.
A car is travelling at 20
m/s along a straight road. After 5 s the brakes are applied. If this caused an
acceleration of 3 m/s2, find the car’s final velocity.
